Goin' up North

Minnesota's Winter Playground

By Suzy Feine

Pages:  1  2  3  4

Bundle up, it's chilly out. The soft snow gently drifts to the ground, blanketing the outdoors with a wintry coat of white. The mercury dips below freezing, and the temperature continues to fall. The winds whip right through your soul, and the wind chill falls even faster than the temperature. All instincts lead you inside to the warmth of the fireplace, snuggled in blankets accompanied by a cup of hot chocolate and your favorite book.

But wait. Venturing inside as Mother Nature transforms this once green and luscious land into a seasonal winter wonderland would deprive you and your children of something those in the far reaches of the northland are fortunate enough to experience and relish for months at a time. Take advantage of this seasonal transformation by finding ways to remain outdoors and enjoy your surroundings.

Cabin Fever

Located in the heart of Minnesota is the city of Brainerd, heralded as one of the best cities in the state to spend a family-oriented vacation. Try one of these well-known resorts for your next winter getaway.

Grand View Lodge, Nisswa, Minn.

Just north of Brainerd is the quaint town of Nisswa, home to Grand View Lodge. Here you'll find northwoods charm and an abundance of lodging options from the nationally-registered, historic Main Lodge to individual cottages and cabins nestled along Gull Lake.

Guests are presented with a weekly itinerary at check-in including indoor activities such as their pool and 110-foot water slide, two hot tubs, game room and fitness center to outdoor sports including ice fishing, snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing and even broom ball. Grand View Lodge also offers spa services at its AVEDA destination spa – Glacial Waters Spa.
