Palm Beach
A Romantic Florida Rendezvous

It's hard to find time for romance. My energetic 2-year-old twins and 5-year-old son usually leave my husband and I grinning, but limp and exhausted by bedtime. So this year Lars and I decided to celebrate my birthday with a romantic weekend getaway in Palm Beach, Fla. We envisioned moonlit beach strolls, dining in restaurants that shun chicken nuggets and sampling Palm Beach's lifestyle of the rich and famous.
Lars and I logged onto the helpful Palm Beach Visitor's Bureau Web site to plan our trip. The reported annual average temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit sounded just right for romance, and we soon selected a tempting itinerary.
To avoid Palm Beach's hotel sticker shock, we rented a car and drove to Palm Beach County where hotels are luxurious but affordable. Lars and I discovered an oasis of romantic island ambience at Crane's Beach House (Delray Beach).
Each of this boutique hotel's 14 "BeachHouse" rooms and suites are decorated by local and regional artists. Along with original tropical artwork, our room featured hand-painted wine glasses, airy down comforters, romantic lighting, kitchens (perfect for our midnight snack of wine, cheese and grapes) and a private outdoor seating area with comfy deck-loungers. And outside we enjoyed the lush palms, tropical flowers, hand-tiled fountains and island pool area complete with a waterfall, white sand and a tiki hut bar.
The hotel does lack room service, but Lars and I were only steps away from Delray's trendy Atlantic Avenue, which is lined with gourmet restaurants. We especially enjoyed lunching al fresco at Boheme Bistro. Don't miss the Chicken Boheme Pita (grilled chicken with exotic, garlic mideast sauce) and the Shrimp Di Mare gourmet pizza.
